SpotCheck Academy – Frequently Asked Questions

What is SpotCheck Academy?

SpotCheck Academy provides specialist training designed to support cosmetic practitioners in assessing skin lesions and client suitability for treatment, more safely. The Academy focuses on recognising risk, understanding diagnostic uncertainty, and knowing who/when not to treat, particularly before procedures such as electrolysis or diathermy.

Who is SpotCheck Academy for?

SpotCheck Academy is designed for cosmetic practitioners, including those practising electrolysis, diathermy, and other advanced skin or cosmetic treatments, who want to strengthen their understanding of lesion risk and practise more safely.

Is SpotCheck Academy a diagnostic course?

No. SpotCheck Academy does not teach diagnosis or replace medical assessment. The training focuses on helping practitioners recognise limitations, identify red flags, and understand why/when a client/lesion requires formal GP or dermatology review before treatment.

Why is lesion assessment important in cosmetic practice?

Some malignant or high-risk skin lesions can appear deceptively benign. Treating a lesion without appropriate assessment or diagnosis can delay cancer detection and expose practitioners to significant clinical and legal risk. SpotCheck Academy helps practitioners understand these risks and act appropriately.

How does SpotCheck Academy differ from SpotCheck?

SpotCheck Academy provides education and training.
SpotCheck is a GP-led advice and guidance service used when a practitioner needs formal medical input.SpotCheck is a service delivered by Aesthetk Ltd, a CQC registered healthcare provider.

Together, they form a clear pathway:

Training to recognise risk → Clinical escalation when needed→Regulated Medical expertise.

What is the partnership with Sterex?

SpotCheck Academy is delivered in partnership with Sterex, the UK’s leading electrolysis and diathermy training provider. This collaboration combines dermoscopy and skin lesion risk training with Sterex’s established procedural standards to support safer cosmetic practice.

Does the course cover electrolysis and diathermy specifically?

Yes. Training includes guidance relevant to client suitability for electrolysis and diathermy, helping practitioners understand when a lesion or client should not be treated and when escalation is required.

Who delivers the training?

Courses are led by GPs with specialist expertise in dermatology and dermoscopy, including Dr Ayub Khan (Dr K), Academic Lead at SpotCheck Academy and an internationally recognised expert in dermoscopy.

Will this training protect me legally?

While no course can eliminate risk, SpotCheck Academy supports safer decision-making, clearer documentation, and appropriate escalation—all of which are key to reducing professional and medico-legal risk.

Do I receive a certificate?

Yes. Participants receive a certificate of completion, suitable for CPD records and professional portfolios.

Is the training online or face-to-face?

SpotCheck Academy offers both online and face-to-face courses, depending on the programme. Details are provided on individual course pages and on Sterex international website.

Does completing course with SpotCheck Academy mean I can treat more lesions?

No. The aim is not to expand scope, but to strengthen understanding of potential risks, improve safety, and support appropriate referral or escalation when needed.

How do I access SpotCheck after completing the course with the Academy?

Graduates are signposted to SpotCheck, where they can access GP/Dermatology-led advice and guidance for lesions that require formal medical review.
